Bio

Guillén Torres is a specialist in open source investigation methods. He has over 15 years of experience in action research and methodological experimentation, using data-based technologies to support communities seeking justice and accountability. As co-founder of Controla Tu Gobierno A.C., a Mexican NGO established in 2013, he pioneered approaches to employ open source information and governmental data to assist marginalized communities in their organizing and advocacy efforts.

Before joining HRC, Guillén held a position as lecturer and researcher at the University of Amsterdam’s Media Studies department, where he also conducted doctoral research. As a member of the Digital Methods Initiative, he has organized close to a dozen intensive investigative research sprints, facilitating collaborations between journalists, activists, academic researchers, and students, to decode contemporary digital phenomena. Guillén holds a Bachelor’s degree in Socioterritorial Studies from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Cuajimalpa (Mexico) and a Master’s in Urban Studies from the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
