Student Investigations Lab Project
Our Investigations Lab students worked with Amnesty International to verify violence against protesters in Mozambique during the 2024 elections. The report examines human rights violations perpetrated by units of the Mozambican security forces during protests that occurred across the country between October 21, 2024, and January 24, 2025. It also evaluates how Mozambican security forces impeded civilian access to online information during the protests.
Amnesty’s report continues to be a key reference within Mozambique to understand the pattern of police conduct during the post-election protests across the country. As a result of the report, a former police commander was questioned by the Attorney General’s office, addressing accusations of his actions while he was in office, marking the first time a police commander has been questioned in Mozambique over human rights violations related to protests.
