Bio

Maggie Andresen (she/her) is the Human Rights Center’s editorial manager and lead writer. She also supports the Center’s professional training program. Before coming to HRC, Maggie worked as a freelance photojournalist and reporter covering the intersections of human rights, climate, gender, and (in)justice. Maggie has investigated the arbitrary detention of transgender women in Rwandan transit centers, the continuing impact of oil spills in the Niger Delta, the forced eviction of coastal communities in Lagos, and the systematic sexual abuse of Nigerian megachurch leader TB Joshua, among other topics. She has been published in the Guardian, BBC Africa Eye, VICE World News, Undark Magazine, The Lily / Washington Post, Reuters, Scientific American, and others. Maggie is an alumna of the Eddie Adams Workshop, where she was awarded the John White “Keep in Flight” Award; a fellow of the International Women’s Media Foundation, a member of the Women Photograph collective; and an alumna of the U.S. Fulbright Program. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Temple University, and sits on the Temple University Journalism Advisory Board. She is HEFAT certified through Global Journalist Security. Maggie is a member of the Overseas Press Club of America, the Frontline Freelance Register, and the Society of Professional Journalists, among others. Currently, she is a newsroom advisor for the San Quentin News and Wall City Magazine.
